Jongumsobomvu Maqoma was a Xhosa Chief and a Commander of the Xhosa forces during the Cape Frontier Wars. He was born in 1798, in the Right Hand House of the Xhosa Kingdom, as the older brother of Chief Sandile kaNgqika and nephew to King Hintsa. Chief Maqoma was a reluctant warrior, who was also tactically astute and strategically brilliant. He conducted several hugely successful guerrilla campaigns against British forces and colonialists in the Amathole Mountains region during the Frontier Wars, also known as the Xhosa Wars of Dispossession.
