The Imaginative Joseph Stalin: 73 Years On Joseph Stalin passed on this day, 5 March 1953, at the age of 75, after having fallen ill and collapsed three days before. Stalin was the revolutionary leader of the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953, transforming it from an agrarian society into a nuclear-armed industrial superpower. He was revered for leading the USSR to victory in WWII, expanding Soviet influence into Eastern Europe, and becoming a protagonist in the Cold War against Western Imperialism. Stalin is largely remembered globally, especially in most of the post-Soviet states, as an economic moderniser and a victorious wartime leader who transformed the Soviet Union from a largely peasant economy into an industrialised superpower within a short period of less than twenty years.
