Victory of the People’s War Against Fascism: 9 May 1945 Every year on 9 May in the former Soviet Union and now in the Russian Republic the day is celebrated as the Great Patriotic War, in which Fascism was defeated in Europe and the rest of the world where it had its tentacles. It is without doubt that the Second World War was a war against fascism. The graphic on top records the hoisting of the flag of victory by Soviet soldiers on the Reichstag in Berlin in May 1945, marking the triumphant end of the war in Europe and the destruction of the blood-stained Hitlerite regime which had brought death and devastation to millions of peoples throughout the world. Today, 80 years afterwards, democratic and progressive forces everywhere celebrate the anniversary of this historic moment. They will acknowledge once again mankind’s debt to the Red Army for “tearing the guts” out of the Nazi army; to the unity of the Allied forces which brought about final victory over the Axis powers and saved the world from fascism. To make this anniversary meaningful, revolutionaries everywhere will rededicate themselves to the struggle to create a new society in which the peoples of the whole world are united to defeat the threat of war, and wipe the last vestiges of imperialism, fascism and racism from the face of the earth.
