Victory of the People’s War Against Fascism: 9 May 1945

Every year on 9 May in the former Soviet Union and now in the Russian Republic the day is celebrated as the Great Patriotic War, in which Fascism was defeated in Europe and the rest of the world where it had its tentacles. It is without doubt that the Second World War was a war against fascism. The graphic on top records the hoisting of the flag of victory by Soviet soldiers on the Reichstag in Berlin in May 1945, marking the triumphant end of the war in Europe and the destruction of the blood-stained Hitlerite regime which had brought death and devastation to millions of peoples throughout the world.

Today, 80 years afterwards, democratic and progressive forces everywhere celebrate the anniversary of this historic moment. They will acknowledge once again mankind’s debt to the Red Army for “tearing the guts” out of the Nazi army; to the unity of the Allied forces which brought about final victory over the Axis powers and saved the world from fascism. To make this anniversary meaningful, revolutionaries everywhere will rededicate themselves to the struggle to create a new society in which the peoples of the whole world are united to defeat the threat of war, and wipe the last vestiges of imperialism, fascism and racism from the face of the earth.

The FORCES OF IMPERIALISM, under the leadership of US President Donald Trump, have launched a world-wide offensive against the peoples of the world that are striving for national democracy and peace. The imperialists are continually committing fresh acts of aggression and spreading the area of warfare. They are sabotaging the United Nations and employing every form of pressure, military, political and economic, to check the course of progress and to re-establish colonialism.

Throughout the world the imperialist powers are conducting an all-out counter-offensive against the global forces of progress and the African Revolution. However, the forces opposing imperialism are, together, far greater than those controlled by the imperialists. Division and disunity among these forces plays into the hands of the imperialist enemy. They give the enemy opportunities to embark on fresh advances in all fields, to delay the people’s advance to national democracy and social emancipation, and to threaten the world with war. Disunity in the ranks of the anti-imperialists prolongs the sufferings and sacrifices of the heroic people of Palestine and all victims of imperialist aggression and oppression.

The anti-imperialist forces of the world must unite; to rebuff all imperialist adventures and assert the people’s will for freedom, independence and peace; to take fresh initiatives for human progress. Our country has also become a crucial battlefield in the international struggle between the forces of imperialism and reaction and those of progress and humanity. Our main contribution to the cause of freedom and peace throughout the world will be to intensify and make more effective our struggle for a national democratic society which will be a powerful factor for progress everywhere. We must do everything in our power to advance anti-imperialist unity in Africa and throughout the world.
