Painful Recap 9 April 1820 Settler Colonialism From 9 April 1820 onwards, around 4,500 British immigrants, who became known as "The 1820 Settlers", arrived at Algoa Bay (which later became known as Port Elizabeth and now Gqeberha) on board 21 (twenty-one) ships, with the "Chapman" arriving first. Sponsored by the British government to relieve unemployment in the United Kingdom and to bolster the Cape Colony's eastern frontier against the African Xhosa people, they were mostly settled in the Eastern Cape, specifically in Albany. The 1820 Settlers caused a massive, lasting pain for the Xhosa people, as well as a demographic shift by establishing a permanent English-speaking presence in the Eastern Cape. Conspicuously, their placement also triggered intensified land invasions and cattle theft, leading to decades, a 100-years, of "frontier wars" with the indigenous Xhosa people. LEST WE FORGET!
